Genre Research - Action and Horror
The Two genres I am choosing to research is going to be horror and action.
Common CAMS in the genre horror is a tilted angle. This is commonly used in horror films because they want to create a dramatic tension during the shots. For example, if there is going to be a supernatural figure coming towards the camera it is going to feel as if you are moving closer to it or pushing away from it.
Common CLAMPS used in the genre horror films that are often used include lighting like low key lighting, up lighting, spotlighting, and under exposure. These lighting are used to create more lighting aesthetics. For example, lowkey lighting is a lighting aesthetic used with a lot of shadow scenes to create suspense or a feeling of mystery. Common props used in horror films are such as baby dolls, chainsaws, Ouij boards, and masks. I'm sure we all have watched one horror film that has used one of the props. These are commonly used as scary props to most people as we watch Michael Myers mask, or Texas chainsaw, or the doll in Annabelle. Common makeup used in horror films are such as makeup used to create cuts and starches, or makeup used on the actors' faces to make them look possessed as in supernatural movies.
Common editing used in horror films are cut, cross, establishing shot, and eyeline match. These are used to make the audience feel more interacted with the actors in the film. For example, eyeline matches can be used in scenarios when the actor has come across whatever horror mythical creature or supernatural ghost, they encounter to make you feel more tension and connected with the scene.
Example films of horror films are resident evil, Godzilla, the conjuring, and hereditary.
Common sound is horror films are sound effects, sound motifs, diegetic sounds.
Element of horror that I like are emotions, characters, and fear of the unknown.
Elements of the horror genre that do not appeal me quite well are killer endings.
Common CAMS in the film action are tilt shots, low angle, and close shots. These angles are used in thriller films to create more of a suspense and tension throughout physical scenes. For example, tilt angle is used in action quite often to really show how intimidating and crazy something is. This can make the actor as well as the audience feel insignificant and weak as well.
Common CLAMPS used in action movies are cars, knives, explosions, and other weapons. For example, guns and weapons are one of the most used props I action movie because it can be used to show the conflict and can also point out who the aggressor is.This is something we mostly see in every single action movie is sometime of weapon being used and defense or being used to target someone creating more dramatic scenarios than it would be if the person did not have a weapon. Common lighting used in action films is such as high key lighting. High key lighting is used because just by the lighting that is used is supposed to make the audience know the movie is about to be intense it is more visible and clearer for graphic scenes occurring for the audience as well. Common editing used in action films is slow and fast-paced editing. This is a main key used for creating tension and suspense in a situation. This can also be good for creating and showing the emotion of a character.
Example films of action are such as tenet, Mulan, venom, and avengers
Common sounds in action films are such as dialogue and diegetic.
Elements of action films that I enjoy are excitement, anticipation, and surprise. I love not knowing what is going to happen next and being surprised by something in a scene I did not suspect.
